Abstract

Aquaculture is a strategic sector for improving food security, creating employment opportunities, and reducing dependence on fish imports in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This study aimed to assess fish farming production systems, fish consumption patterns, and the major constraints affecting the development of aquaculture in the city of Bandundu. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 52 fish farmers, 81 households, and 17 key stakeholders, including government services, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and fish marketing actors. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The results revealed that 88.46% of the fish farmers were male, while 61.54% had more than five years of farming experience. Fish farming was predominantly extensive (67.31%) and exclusively practiced in earthen ponds supplied mainly by spring water. The average annual fish production was 182.79 kg per farm. The major constraints identified were limited access to financial resources, inadequate equipment, high production input costs, and insufficient technical support. Regarding household consumption, all respondents (100%) reported consuming fish, mainly in the form of fresh fish. However, 64% considered the local fish supply insufficient to meet market demand. Despite these challenges, stakeholders expressed strong support for the development of aquaculture through improved financing mechanisms, technical training, and strengthened producer organizations.

This study highlights the significant potential of aquaculture in Bandundu while emphasizing the need for appropriate public policies and increased investment to sustainably enhance local fish production.
