PERCEPTION DES MENAGES ET ROLE DES SERVICES ETATIQUES DANS LE DEVELOPPEMENT DE LA PISCICULTURE A BANDUNDU VILLE (PROVINCE DU KWILU, R D C)

Aquaculture represents a strategic opportunity for improving food security and household income in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nevertheless, fish farming remains poorly developed in the city of Bandundu despite the area's considerable natural potential. This study aimed to assess household perceptions, evaluate the contribution of public institutions, and identify the main factors influencing the sustainable development of aquaculture. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative techniques was adopted. Data were collected from 52 fish farmers, 81 households and 17 institutional stakeholders through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and field observations. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using R software.
The findings indicate that all surveyed households consume fish; however, only a small proportion obtains fish from local aquaculture, whereas imported fish and river fisheries remain the principal sources of supply. Most households expressed willingness to engage in fish farming provided that financial, technical and training constraints are addressed. Fish farmers identified limited access to inputs, inadequate equipment, high production costs and weak institutional support as the major constraints. Institutional stakeholders also emphasized insufficient financial resources, lack of technical staff and inadequate extension services.
The study highlights the need for an integrated public policy aimed at strengthening technical capacities, improving access to credit, promoting producer organizations and developing local hatcheries and feed production systems. Such interventions would significantly enhance aquaculture productivity, reduce fish imports and improve food security in the Kwilu Province.
