Abstract

This study analyzes the current production and marketing aspects of pig farming in Kenge City and its surrounding areas, Kwango Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The objective was to characterize farming practices, identify the main production constraints, and assess pig marketing systems. A survey was conducted among 271 pig farmers using a structured questionnaire, supported by direct observation and focus group discussions.

The findings revealed that pig feeding mainly relies on locally available resources, particularly palm kernel cake, silage, and cassava products, while mineral and vitamin supplementation remains inadequate. Most farmers do not monitor the live weight of pigs before slaughter, which generally occurs between 6 and 8 months of age. Pig marketing is mainly directed toward local markets and represents an important source of household income.

However, the sector faces several challenges, including declining selling prices, limited market access, inadequate technical support, and poor adoption of improved husbandry practices. The study recommends strengthening farmer training, improving animal nutrition, expanding access to veterinary services, and better organizing the pig value chain to enhance productivity and profitability.
