Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is the main food crop in the Kabelekese sector of Luiza territory, Kasai-Central province (DRC). Current cassava yields remain relatively low, fluctuating between 4 and 4.65 tons per hectare, while the region's agronomic potential is estimated at nearly 10 tons per hectare. This significant gap reflects underperformance in agricultural production and has multiple repercussions on the living conditions of the population. Indeed, poor harvests limit household food availability, reduce farmers' incomes, exacerbate rural poverty, and, in some cases, encourage migration to other areas in search of better opportunities. This situation fuels a vicious cycle: low yields lead to a decrease in farmers' financial resources, which restricts their ability to invest in more efficient farming techniques, agricultural inputs, or improved varieties. Consequently, productivity remains low, perpetuating the economic and food insecurity of farming households.

Sustainable solutions involve the dissemination of improved varieties adapted to the local context, easier access to agricultural inputs and credit, strengthened technical support, and the promotion of participatory research in agroecology.
